Will's Surgery

Will with his Buddy Elmo
Back on October 22nd Will had a little surgery. He had a Meatotamy. They told us to talk to Will about his surgery and let him know what was going to happen. We told him that they would take him into a room and put a mask on him and that he would go to sleep then the doctor was going to cut him and then he would wake up. And his response was "when I wake up I am going to scare the doctor like this rarrrrr." Because he thought the mask was going to be like a Halloween mask.  He is so funny.

The night before his surgery after midnight he had to start fasting, then the next morning after 10:30 he couldn't have liquids. I did so good too. No food was out, no water bottles out, nothing. I only ate a little bit when he was in the other room. We went for a walk around 11:30 to get out of the house because he kept asking for a drink. We had to leave for the hospital around 12:15 because the procedure was at 1:40. After we got back from our walk I opened the car door and told Will to get in the car. I went in and grabbed a few things from the house and was right back out. When I got out to the car Will was sitting in his car seat eating a sucker. I started freaking out because I didn't want to reschedule the surgery. It is not fun making a 2 year old fast. I took the sucker away from him and he was crying and crying. Poor little Will was so hungry and thirsty and I had taken the sucker away. He cried about half the way to Primary Children's Hospital and was saying "Mom I'm thirsty, Mom I need a drink of water". I felt horrible. I was sitting in the front and eating nuts and sipping on water. He finally fell asleep about 5 minutes before we got there, so he was nice and cranky when we got there. We got checked in and had to tell them that he was sucking on a sucker just after 12:00. The nurse came back and told us that they are going to have to see if they could fit the surgery in at the end of the day. Because he had the sucker we had to wait 3 extra hours from the time he had the sucker. Luckily they fit us in, but we had to wait until almost 4:00. So we sat and sat and waited and waited with hungry and thirsty little Will until almost 4:00. I also had a bad migraine that day because I wasn't able to eat that well. When they were ready for him I walked him down to the room and watched them put the mask on him. He was freaking out which was sad. But thank goodness the procedure was only about 15 minutes long. Everything went well but he did have a hard time waking up. He didn't quite rarrr at the doctor unless screaming like crazy counts. We made it home around 5:20. Barely in time for me to make soup for Friendship Friday for Relief Society at 6:00.

I'm so sorry! It is so hard to starve your child, then have to watch them go through all of that! I had no idea that they would make you wait on a sucker! I'm glad you all did ok!

They made you wait over a sucker? Seriously? That really, um, sucks.

It's hard to do the starving thing. We've had to do that before with Scottie, and his surgeries have NEVER happened on time. Brandon & I have to take turns out in the hallway eating something so we have strength to deal with him waking up. It's so hard.

Hope he's healing up well!

Ry had that done too. He was so freaked out to go to the bathroom after. I really think he did not go for 2 days!!! I'm glad everything went well.
